WICKER PARK FIREWISE PROJECT
Some residents may have noticed recent activity in a portion of Rassie Wicker Park. The work going on is part of a Community Firewise Grant Program project. The Community Firewise Program is administered by the North Carolina Division of Forest Resources in cooperation with the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service. The NC Firewise Community Block Grant Program provides funding to wildland urban interface communities for fire hazard mitigation projects. The objective of the project in Rassie Wicker Park is to reduce hazardous buildup of forest floor fuels along with ladder type fuels so that if a wildfire starts or enters the property it will be manageable. This will help to protect surrounding residential areas from fires that may start within the park. Controlled burns will be performed periodically as part of the future management practices to keep excess fuels from building up again. An added benefit of the project and future controlled burns is the enhancement and restoration of this area to a Longleaf Pine ecosystem. The Longleaf Pine is highly fire resistant and dependent upon fire for controlling hardwoods and faster growing tree species that compete with it along with aiding its seed germination.
